UN-Habitat uses Minecraft as a community participation and engagement tool in the design and implementation of public space projects. UN-Habitat’s Global Public Space Programme pioneered the Block by Block methodology in 2012 and oversees the implementation of the funded projects.

Block By Block worked with over 30,000 youth, from which 40% are girls, in more than 87 cities using Minecraft to co-create 135 public spaces enjoyed by millions of people.

In order to reach scale, we would like to see the methodology adopted by hundreds of other organizations, including local governments, civil society and the private sector. To make this possible we have created this training kit to support public space advocates through a step-by-step approach on how to use Minecraft as a participatory tool to co-design urban spaces.
